A car accident can result in very significant injuries even if there are no broken bones. One of these injuries is nerve injuries after suffering whiplash during the car accident.
Many times I hear, "Oh, it's just whiplash." However, if you understand whiplash, it can be a very serious injury. Rear-end car accidents can cause very high accelerations of the human head, even during low speed automobile accidents. During this rapid movement, the tissues of the neck can be strained or torn. Studies have documented injuries to the muscles of the front and back of the neck, the ligaments of the spine, the vertebral and carotid arteries, and the many nerve that travel along the spine.
Studies also documented nerve injuries to the biracial plexus--the bundle of nerves and blood vessels that travel from the neck to the shoulder--after a rear-end car accident. For people who have shoulder pain after a rear-end car accident, it would be wise to have their doctor investigate the possibility of nerve injury.
So, be careful when you hear others minimize the extent a "just whiplash" injury can cause from a car accident. Know that this type of injury could cause significant and life-long problems if not treated.
