The smashed windshield tells the story. As they were walking to their school bus on Utica Drive, two teenagers-Walter Edelman, a 15-year-old ninth-grade student at Hudson High School, and William Calder, a 13-year-old who attends Hudson Middle School, were struck by a car and thrown onto the hood of the car and shattered the windshield before landing on the road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the vehicle saw other children walking to their bus stop in her path and swerved to miss them, but hit to the two boys. The boys were loaded helicopters and flown to All Children's Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center.
This accident is a reminder of how important it is for all drivers to watch out for school children early in the morning. As drivers, we are in a better position to be responsible to avoid these types of accidents. Since they are dressed for school, they most likely are not wearing reflective gear as runners and walker would wear. If you see kids, slow down and pay attention. It could save a child's life and keep you from having life-long nightmares of hitting a child.
