During the past decade, almost 200 children between ages 4 and 7 have been killed in Florida car accidents. Almost 1,000 have been injured. However, in the state of Florida, children 4 years old and above are allowed to ride in vehicles without a booster seat despite a national study by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia that found booster seats can reduce the risk of injury in children ages 4 through 7 by 59 percent.
Next year, things may change. State Senator Thad Altman is about to file a bill that would make booster seats mandatory for children ages 4 through 7. The new bill will be debated during next year's legislative session, which begins in March.
