With Target's, Wal-Mart's, and the malls' parking lot filling up with holiday shoppers, the chance of a parking lot car accident increases. Thus, it is important that precautions are taken to avoid a parking lot car accident and you should know what to do in the event you have a car accident in a parking lot.
Some tips for avoiding parking lot accidents include:
- When backing out of your parking spot, take an additional minute to completely check behind you, and towards both sides of your car, to avoid backing into another car or a pedestrian. Florida Statute 316.1985 states that the driver of a vehicle shall not back up the vehicle unless such movement can be made with safety and without interfering with other traffic.
- Slow down. Racing through a parking lot greatly increases your chances of hitting another car or a pedestrian.
- Although a parking lot is not a city street, you should still obey all traffic and safety signs, just as if you were on the road.
- Park a little further away from the entrance to the business you are patronizing. Too many parking lot car accidents occur because the person leaving the close parking spot cannot see the vehicle turning into that parking lane.
If you are involved in a car accident in a parking lot, you should be treated just the same way as an accident on a city street or any other road with one exception--because the location of the vehicles at the time of impact is very important to establish liability in a parking lot accident (especially between two cars that are backing out), you should put your vehicle in park and get out and take pictures of the exact location of the vehicles involved in the car crash. You should also get the other driver’s name, driver’s license number and insurance information, license tag number and contact information. Also, try to get one or two impartial witnesses to provide their name and contact information, in case you need to corroborate your version of what happened. This is crucial, especially in a "he said-she said" situation.
Drive safely in the parking lots as you do your shopping and watch out for those who don't. A few minutes of caution can prevent your holiday from being spoiled because of a car accident.
