Yet another bicyclist is killed on Tampa Bay streets bringing the number of fatal bicycle accidents to 9 deaths in less than 4 months.
Early this morning, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a Jeep on U.S. 41. The crash happened about 5:15 a.m. near St. Paul Street, according to FHP. Troopers said the bicyclist and Jeep were headed northbound on U.S. 41. The passenger in the Jeep said that the driver could not see the bicyclist until it was too late. There are no street lights in the area.
Tuesday's crash is the ninth fatal bicycle accident in recent months across the region. Those killed were: Anthony G. Weeks, 33, Diane Vega, 53, Kayoko Ishizuka, 30, Neil Alan Smith, 48, Stephen Allen Ivey, 52, Joe Dyals, 46, LeRoy "Roy" Collins Jr., 75, Brad Ash, 41.
This crash should serve as a reminder to all drivers and bicyclists. Drivers, look out for bicyclists. Scan the sides of the road as you drive. Bicyclists, wear bright colors and reflective clothes. Put a light on the front and back of your bicycle. Working together, drivers and bicyclists can prevent further bicycle accidents.
Our challenging economy and unemployment rate combined with nice weather will result in more bikes and pedestrians on the road. Drive and ride safely and watch out for those who don't.
